Thermeon has seized the imperial throne and longs to free the Empire's people from the chains of slavery that bind both their bodies and spirits. But he grew up in a wild place and finds imperial civilization alien. He needs the guidance of his goddess-star.

A member of the old aristocracy, Saijee tries to guide Thermeon. He has appointed her as his mind-river of Lal.

Ix is Horl's daughter, and the galaxy's biggest slaver. She was a Member of the Circle in charge of Slave Affairs. She will lose her positiion when Thermeon frees the slaves.

Kahee is the voice of doom.

Thermeon's half-sister, Morning Glory leaves the capital to avoid being mistaken for his goddess-star.

Maneg is a bureaucrat hired by Saijee. He is a brother of the Decadent Epoch Emperor Axosid.

Raolin is Head of the Circle of Experts, a supposedly all-knowing bunch of authorities on everything. His specialty is Genetic Algorithms.

Xeera is a daughter of Horl, Ix's half-sister. She was formerly Mind-river of Lal.

Fleomis is a son of Horl who acted as his chief of security. He is Ix's full brother.

Kruvian is High Magician of Planet Amugro, a member of that planet's "high-hair" aristocracy.

Blizz is a princess of Amugro.

Zerlo is son of the High Magician and betrothed to the Princess.

Duke Batru of Blue Cavern is Zerlo's rival in love and leader of the party opposing the Red Cavern's ascendancy on Amugro.

Condor and Thermeon grew up together in the Valley, once the setting for some of Horl's experiments with human evolution.

Mammoth is a friend from Thermeon's youth.

Lintee is a freed slave living on Lal. She has great artistic talent.

Moa is one of Amugro's freed Yakasni slaves. She is considered a wise woman by her people.

Derora is Moa's granddaughter.

Noils is a freed Yakasni slave, formerly the property of Zerlo.

Dasyan is a Yakasni who rejects freedom so that he may continue to serve his master, High Magician Kruvian.

Now that they are free, the Yakasni children can bond with their own Torsa horses.

Fuerida is the daughter of Morning Glory and Orgmorgan, and a pilot like her father.

Zilf is the niece of Ix and Xeera. She acts as their pilot, having more mindsize than either of them. During the Decadent Epoch, she was high priest of the Church of Faith, Hope, and a Greater good.

Deov is an imperial minor newly assigned to Amugro. The minors make up the imperial armed forces. On duty, they wear golden armor, with plumes and surcoats in the emperor's colors. The imperial insignia appears on the chest, usually animated.
