Katora is empress of the galaxy. Her husband, Emperor Quintillion, is the love of her life. Both of them are powerful mindseas, and they share a dream of bringing forth a future of justice, freedom and beauty for humanity. How can anything mar this wonderful dream?

Quintillion is emperor of the galaxy. He is the most powerful mindsea in the galaxy, but he never uses his vast powers to cause others pain. He is a consumate artist who can create works of beauty, both in music and in architecture.

Quintillion's stepson, who once made war on him, until he became locked up in a mind-duel with his own copy.

Torm's copy. Torm thought they could combine their power to defeat Quintillion, but instead they became locked in a mind-link arguing about which of them would rule after their victory.

Vedina is the mother of Torm and a daughter of the former emperor Thermeon.

Fuerida is a Deep-level pilot.

River Rock is Torm's half-brother. His father was a nurr, a baboon-lion-human hybrid native to Lal.

Rahalo is Quintillion's brother, a Deep-level pilot.

A daughter of Thermeon who serves as mind-river of Lal.

Orgmorgan is head of the Pilots Guild and Fuerida's father.

Native Lalians follow their age-old tradition of dro ranching in the desert surrounding the capital of the galactic empire. From left to right are Galena, her parents, Botthu and Veeda, and their neighbor, Thun.

Quixa is Thermeon's favorite daughter, headmistress of the Mindsea Academy of Eltien, in the Code Empire.

Once the galaxy's mastermind, Horl was defeated by Thermeon and fled to the Code Empire, where he became a Sentinel of the Keep. He is Quixa's husband.

The former emperor, Thermeon, was said to be dead when Quintillion took the throne, but he has in fact fled to the Andromeda galaxy. As he voyages between galaxies, he tries to integrate his Deep-self with his human self, which Deep-Thermeon regards as a baboon.

Doripoe is one of the imperial minors who serve as the imperial armed forces.

Kerbol is an investigative reporter, daughter of the famous detective, Sunfox. The biggest news of the preceding century was her championing of a time-orphan who claimed to be Sunfox returning to their timeline after his murder by slavers.

Sunfox is a famous detective. His father is Head of the Circle Raolin. His mother was a granddaughter of Thermeon. Genetic Algorithms would not vouch for his identity after his return as a time-orphan, but Raolin believed Kerbol's story and officially adopted him.

Raolin is Katora's father. He is head of the Bureau Branch of the galactic government, with equal political power to the emperor.

Vaz is Galena's husband. He is a native of Longgor, a planet much smaller and farther from its sun than is Lal.

Epes is a time-orphan who claims to be the son of Quintillion and Thermeon from an alternate universe. Genetic Algorithms denies his claim. He is most probably a fraud, but he is amusing.

Ix is Horl's daughter, and the galaxy's biggest slaver. Her organization murdered the original Sunfox. They continue their depredations upon imperial planets.

Mrrmrr is the Fokeean sabertooth Katora met on Mosalno and brought to the capital.

Zapano is the son of Galena and Vaz.

Shetcha is Mrrmrr's half-human daughter.

Aspo is the son of Katora and Quintillion.

Zeolet is the daughter of River Rock and Luixa.

Veekuh is King of Ulona.

Vookuh is Queen of Ulona.

Attequol founded the galactic empire. Legend says that he lives inside the Judgement Wall and will appear when the Empire is in need.

Oo is a member of the Oopob people of Ulona. Ulona's yellow children are artisans.

Oojnoo is a wild pahmak of Ulona.

Falko is a member of the Empire's old aristocracy. Her husband, Ixehu, is the son of Thermeon and Ix.

Wirl is a temporal emgineer, a grandson of Thermeon.

Omia is a daughter of Thermeon.

Salomano and Kazandar are Deep-level beings who have acted through generations of ancestral humans as they strive to direct evolution.
